Description
Parke Davis, History Of Pharmacy In Pictures, Robert Thom and George Bender Title: A History Of Pharmacy In Pictures Author: Text by George A. Bender, Prints from paintings by artist Robert Thom. Publisher: Parke Davis & Co Edition: Not Dated Description: This is a rare complete Parke, Davis & Company A History Of Pharmacy In Pictures portfolio. The portfolio measures 21.5" by 18" and contains the complete set of 40 color prints (photolithographs?) measuring 21" by 18" with full page descriptions that were distributed to physicians and pharmacists in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The prints were taken from Great Moments in Pharmacy, a collection of 40 paintings depicting a comprehensive history of pharmacy by artist Robert Thom (1915-1979), an author, artist and lecturer who received his art training at the Institute of Fine Arts in Columbus, Ohio. Descriptions of each painting were written by Parke-Davis Pharmacist George A. Bender (1904-1985) who conceived the idea for the paintings when he served as editor of the North Western Druggist from 1929 through 1932. Commission of the series was funded by Parke-Davis and Thom completed the original oil paintings in the early 1950s. The original paintings have been displayed at the Smithsonian Institution and other museums. Condition: The portfolio itself shows minor edgewear, soiling, few small tears and bumping to the corners. The interior prints and descriptions are in very good to near fine condition, though the upper corners show some "waviness" that is probably from handling and storage.
