Description
You are viewing a scarce Moravian devotional book printed in two parts, with daily prayers for each day of the week and special religious occasions. The prayers are arranged chronologically from January through December. What makes this devotional so unique is the fact that it was brought to Pennsylvania in 1750 by Georg Michael Odenwaldt from Neckargemuend in the Neckar Valley of Baden-Wuerttenberg. Odenwaldt used the devotional to jot down what occurred to him as he traveled to Pennsylvania, entering his notes on the day of the week when these events occurred, so in a sense, his marginalia becomes a type of diary. He arrived at New York from Europe and then WALKED to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania....I am not sure how far he realized that would be, but I am certain he wore out a couple of pairs of shoes to accomplish the feat considering that there were very few roads at that time. The book is divided into two separate works, with "part 1" bound in at the back; part 2 at the front half. Both parts are unpaginated. The binding is German, half leather with mottled boards. Overall condition, excellent with only some minor dampstaining on the titlepage of part 1 (see scan). Odenwaldt's inscription stating that he was born at Neckargemuend and that he arrived in Bethlehem, PA on June 26, 1750 is written in his hand inside the front cover (see scan). MUSEUM QUALITY. RARE. TEXT AND INSCRIPTIONS IN GERMAN.
