Description
Snyder's Treasures is pleased to offer An Original and Authentic 23rd Regiment National Guard State of New York Company D Commander Named Presentation Sword This is the real deal! This is a very fancy 19th Century 1893 dated presentation Commanding Officer's sword. The sword was presented to First Lieutenant Alfred Somerset Orchard, Commanding Company D, 23rd Regiment, National Guard of the State of New York on the occasion of his promotion.Lieutenant Orchard was a career officer with documented service. He served 15 years by 1895. His actual date of promotion to First Lieutenant was May 28, 1894. In 1898, New York Governor Black appointed him to service in the 201st Regiment from the 23rd Regiment (for mobilization to the Spanish-American War). This unit was mobilized for the Spanish-American War in 1898. This sword is exceptionally fancy model, marked by the noted New York military distributor Ridabock & Co., (the successors to J.H. McKenney &Co., (Baker & McKenney)) Manufacturers of and Dealers in Military Goods in the late 19th century located in New York City. It is complete and intact including the original silver grips and twisted pair gilded wire wrap around the grips. The sword has a folding clam-shell style guard, with the Federal war eagle (facing the arrows) surrounded by six flags on the right side guard and Federal shield on a stand of arms on the folding left side guard. The left side guard is retained in the open position by a robust button release. The knuckle bow is very fancy with the bow and finial having laurel and floral embellishments. The knuckle bow has laurel leaves. The pommel has a shield on one side and war eagle on the other side. The blade has Ridabock & Co., New York, NY maker mark etched on the left side at the ricasso. Both sides of the blade are etched with military motifs with U.S. markings, US flags, stacks of arms and the name Lieutenant Alfred S. Orchard presentation 23rd Regt. N.G.S.N.Y and date 10 July 1983 etched in the panel. Right and left etchings are different patterns, all with military themes. The etches are 16-1/2 inches long from the ricasso. The blade measures 30-3/4 inches. The blade is bright with no defects or significant darkness. The edges are not sharp by design and have not been dinged or abused. These are overall views of right and left of the sword and scabbard. The 32 inch scabbard is perfectly fitted to the sword with matching top and center hanger attachments with solid moveable mounting rings and a matching drag, all in gilded brass. There are some very minor dings on the drag from routine carry. The sword in the scabbard measures 38 inches long overall. There is a C.S. stamped inspector marking near the throat. The sword comes complete with the gold bullion belt with hangers and N.Y. gilt on brass buckle. It is faintly maker marked M. C. LILLY 13 W. 30th ST. NEW YORK on the back of the buckle protector. This is a superlative example of the late 19th century presentation dress sword and would be an outstanding addition to any American sword collection.
