Description
A Trio of Arkansas Land Documents - One Signed by John Quincy Adams - All For The Same Property - (1) 1803 Request for grant of land in the name of Catherine Pertuis. Signed by Francisco Luengo, commandant of the Arkansas post. (2) 1818 deed signed by Elizabeth Pertuis (her mark) selling same land to William Russell. Russell was an early settler and attorney in St. Louis, Territory of Louisiana. Mostly involved in land speculation and is given credit for much of the development of Missouri and Arkansas Territories. He also extended into the Illinois and Iowa Territories. He was the founder of Little Rock, Arkansas and Alton, Illinois. Although he was heavily involved in politics, he never held any important positions, and after the purchase of the Louisiana Territory, a lot of his Spanish and French landgrants were disallowed by the Board of Commissioners, because it was thought that a number of them were fraudulent. In his will, dated 1857, he left over ½ million dollars in lands and money to all his heirs. (3) 1825 confirmation of landgrant signed by J.Q. Adams, President of the United States.
