Description
1 5/8" lithographed tin pocket mirror with the following Prohibition party campaign slogan on it: "I'M ON THE WATER [WAGON] NOW". The word "wagon" is not on the button but is implied by the image of a red and yellow horsedrawn water wagon. There is considerable loss to the litho as well as oxidation around the edge of the mirror as can be seen in the photograph accompanying the listing. "I'm On the Water Wagon Now" was also a popular song hit of 1903 written by composer John Walter Bratton (1867-1947) and sung by comic opera comedian Frank Daniels in his musical comedy The Office Boy. (Bratton was the composer who wrote the popular song of 1907, "Teddy Bears' Picnic.") In a 1903 interview with Frank Daniels that appeared in a column called "Bits of Stageland Gossip" in the NY Times, Daniels said, "The best song that I have had in years, and probably the biggest hit in "The Office Boy," is a topical ditty called "I'm On the Water Wagon Now." This number is introduced by a bit of good business. On a table are a whisky bottle and a glass. In an absentminded way, as if from force of habit, I lift the bottle, fill the glass, and am about to drink, when I realize that I'm "on the water wagon." The first strains of the air are played by the orchestra. I semi-regrefully replace the bottle and the glass on the table, and, like a little bird, burst into song. "What, you won't stand for the bird part of it? Well, maybe you're right. Hear the song anyway. It is a lesson in temperance and has given rise to the report that I am in the hire of the Prohibition party." The chorus of the song goes, 'But I'm on the water wagon now; I never get a jag on now, I am riding smooth and lightly; To my seat I am strapped tightly, For I'm on the water wagon now."
