Hand-Woven Hand-dyed ZAPOTEC Indian Wool Rug Start Price USD 499.99 Current Price USD 499.99 Time Left - Bid Count 0 Buy It Now Price - Reserve Price - Start Time Tuesday, November 25, 2008 End Time Tuesday, December 02, 2008 Location Schaumburg, IL See more about 'Hand-Woven Hand-dyed ZAPOTEC Indian Wool Rug ' Description This BEAUTIFUL hand woven rug is from the very finest collection of Zapotec Indian Weavings from the most famous of weaving families in Oaxaca.  The rug is a product of almost 2,000 years of weaving, dating back to 900 A.D.  The Zapotecs live in a village called Teotilan de Valle, high in the mountains outside of the city of Oaxaca where they have remained isolated.  They are one of the last remaining cultures of the world to complete the entire weaving and dying process without the benefit of modern science.  T To elaborate a sheep wool tapete (rug) the following process takes place: First, the sheep is shaved and the wool is washed out at the nearest river. Once washed, it is then set out to dry with the heat of the sun. Preceding this process is the straightening of the raw fleece, aligning, and finally softening it. For the range of rich, beautiful colors, natural and vegetable dyes are used as well as insect dyes. Other dyes come from indigo leaves for blue, alfalfa leaves for green, nut tree bark for brown, and pecan shells for tan. We purchased this in Arizona from the Arizona Creations Zapotec Indian Rug Gallery.  We have treated this like the masterpiece it is, as it has never been placed on a floor or wall.  It comes with a certificate of authenticity that this is a Zapotec Indian Rug made by Artist JOSE de LOS ANGELAS, Hand woven and Hand dyed Wool.  Estimated value at the time was $690, which we paid.  We were sold on the beauty of the craftmanship of this rug, and the natural dyes used- some of which are no longer even used.
