Description
Current Lot Napoleon Bonapart (1769 - 1821). A beautiful letter signed "Napole" and dated from Milan on "10 Prairial an 13" (30 May 1805), four days after his coronation as King of Italy. This took place in the Cathedral of the Lombard capital with the iron crown and with great pomp, when he pronounced the famous words "God gave it to me, Woe on him who touches it". On a sheet in-4, the Emperor informs his Minister of the Interior, Jean Baptiste de Nompere de Champagny, Duke of Cadore ( 1756 - 1834) that his colleague, Martin-Michel Charles Gaudin (1754 - 1841), Duke of Gaeta and Minister of Finances has left Paris to stop over in Turin and that the local authorities should be informed. Napoleon was about to start his triumphal journey through his new Kingdom, a journey that would conclude in Turin on the next 7th and 8th of July after visiting Brescia, Verona, Mantova, Bologna, Modena, Reggio, Parma, Piacenza and Genoa. The imperial signature is almost complete on a letter evoking the takeover of the Italian Kingdom, of which the government would be entrusted by Napoleon to his adopted son, Eugenio de Beauharnais on the following June 7th.
